Hariri Family
The family of late Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri (1944-2005) counts his six children (Ayman, Fahd, Hind, Joumana, Saad, Bahaa), his widow Nazik Hariri, his sister former MP Bahia Hariri, his nephews Nader and Ahmad, as well as his brother Chafik. A tycoon and businessman, Rafik Hariri became a multi-billionaire in Saudi Arabia after founding Saudi Oger, the construction company used by the Saudi royal family for most of their main investments. He was assassinated in 2005. After his killing, his sons inherited stakes in Saudi Oger and Ayman, Fahd, and Bahaa sold them to their brother Saad, Rafik’s second son and a former Prime Minister.
Saad Hariri was appointed Prime Minister in December 2016. He had however resigned following popular protests in 2019, and has seemingly been absent from formal Lebanese political life since 2022. He had also held the Prime Minister position from November 2009 to June 2011. He has been the leader of the Future Movement since 2005. Prior to entering politics, Saad was the Chairman of the Executive Committee of Oger Telecom, which pursued telecommunication interests in the Middle East and Africa, from 1994 to 2005. In addition, he was the chairman of Omnia Holdings and a board member of Oger International Entreprise de Travaux Internationaux, Saudi Oger, Saudi Investment Bank, Saudi Research and Marketing Group, and Lebanese television channel Future TV.
Bahaa, the eldest son, founded and chairs Horizon Group, a real estate holding company with investments in Amman, Jordan and Beirut, Lebanon. He helped revitalize an area of Amman in Jordan called Abdali. The project, in partnership with the Jordanian government, is worth an estimated $5 billion. Bahaa is also the majority owner of Globe Express Services, a logistics company with a presence in more than 100 countries. He also made a short comeback in politics via the project Sawa Li Lubnan, alongside a number of media projects, primarily Sawt Beirut International.
Ayman, the third son, sold his 42% stake in the family holding company GroupMed in 2017, with interests in banking and real estate, for $535 million. He invests in startups through the New York-based firm Red Sea Ventures; among its investments was smart thermostat Nest, now part of Google. He is a cofounder and CEO of Vero, an ad-free social media platform that lets users share music, videos and photos.
Fahd, the youngest son, invested some of the proceeds of the sale of his Oger shares to his brother in 2012 in three Lebanese banks, including Bank Audi, and in real estate in New York and Paris. He has also developed three residential buildings in Beirut.
Rafik’s sister, Bahia Hariri is involved in the Hariri Foundation in Saida. A politician, Bahia was elected as Member of Parliament for the Sunni seat in Saida in 1992. She was reelected in 1996, 2000, 2009 and 2018. From July 2008 to November 2009 she served as Minister of Education. She is also a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO, and heads the Islamic Organization for Higher Education. She also serves on the Advisory Council of World Links Arab Region. Since 1992, Bahia has been a member of the board of trustees of the Lebanese American University.
Rafik’s widow, Nazik serves as a Non-Executive at BankMed S.A.L. and as a Director of GroupMed S.A.L. (Holding) and Arab Bank PLC - Jordan. She serves as the President of the Rafik Hariri Foundation and several other humanitarian, cultural, and educational institutions in Lebanon and the Gulf region. She is the First Ambassador of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, as well as President of this Foundation's 206-A Bone Fund.
The Hariri family is involved in several media outlets, either directly or through intermediary companies they own. They are involved in Annahar through Al Mal Investment Co. SAL, in Al-Mustaqbal newspaper (discontinued) and Future TV directly, in Radio Orient through Wave Holding, and in The Daily Star (discontinued) through D.S. Holding and Millennium Development. Former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri also had shares in Télé Liban, which were bought by the government he was leading in 1996. The Hariri family also owns the Paris-based Radio Orient, broadcasting in France.
