Jean Kassir

Jean Kassir

Jean Kassir is the co-founder of Megaphone, an independent media platform that covers news through engaging formats, counters the political establishment's narratives, and features stories of marginalized groups.

Jean was also part of several progressive and anti-establishment initiatives since 2011. He previously worked at Amnesty International focusing on individuals at risk in the MENA region, as well as the Carnegie Middle East Center focusing on Syrian refugees’ rights in Lebanon and Jordan, and contentious politics in the MENA region. He holds a Master’s degree in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is the nephew of slain journalist Samir Kassir.

In April 2023, he was handed a summons to report for questioning at the Central Inspection Directorate, a branch of the General Directorate of State Security. No reason was given on the summons. Kassir refused to go on the grounds that Lebanon’s State Security is not authorized to investigate journalists. According to reports, these measures target the journalistic investigations and coverage conducted by Megaphone regarding the Beirut port explosion which occurred on August 4, 2020.
